XXXVII Ustasha Battalion (XXXVII. ustaška bojna)

Formed at the beginning of 1943 in Bjelovar from overage volunteers raised in the Ðurđevac (Djurdjevac) – Pitomača area between Koprivnica and Virovitica. (1)

5 Apr 43: 3d Co. transferred from Bjelovar to Ðurđevac (Djurdjevac) to be assigned as the garrison there.
May 43: formation completed, Bn. assigned to 4th Mountain Brigade as its III Bn. (XXXVII Ustasha Bn.)/8th Mountain Rgt. and stationed in Veliki Bastaji/15 km NE of Daruvar for operations.
29 May 43: being used to guard the larger villages along the railway between Koprivnica – Kloštar – Pitomača – Virovitica.
20 Jun 43: now up to full authorized strength with Bn. HQ, HQ Co. and 1st – 4th Co.
25-27 Aug 43: Bn. participated in Operation “Bilo gora Ost” in the Bilo gora Mountains as III Bn./8th Mountain Regiment.
1 Sep 43: in Grubišno Polje/14 km N of Daruvar.
Oct 43: German General Brauner, commanding general of the 187. Res.Div., did not want the XXXVII Ustasha Battalion employed as III Bn./8th Mountain Rgt. because of the age of the men, and requested that it be completely rebuilt using younger Ustasha recruits. It appears that this request was approved and carried out in May – June 1944 (see below).
Feb 44: now in Bjelovar attached to V Ustasha Brigade, which had just moved from Hercegovina to the Koprivnica – Bjelovar area at the beginning of February.
5 May 44: reforming in Bjelovar - on had two companies on this date.
1 Jun 44: Bn. still being shown on German order of battle charts as III Bn./8th Mountain Rgt., but this is not believed to be correct.
20 Jun 44: Bjelovar attached to V Ustasha Brigade - strength 6 officers and 872 men.
2-31 Jul 44: took part in Operations “Rouen I” and “Rouen II” in the Kalnik Mountains near Bjelovar.
28 Jul 44: billeted in the Dugo Selo area (Security Zone Bjelovar).
Aug 44: ordered renamed II Bn./X Ustasha Brigade, but it does not appear to have been carried out.
18 Aug 44: in defense of Pitomača, which was under attack by elements of Partisan X Corps.
3 Nov 44: 5th Co./XXXVII Ustasha Battalion in Križevci/28.5 km NW of Bejelovar reportedly deserted to the Partisans this date. (Note: the Partisans often granted amnesty to the Ustasha to entice them to desert; sometimes this was honored and sometimes not).
10-30 Nov 44: Bn. absorbed into the V Ustasha Brigade in late November 1944.
