XXVIII Ustasha Battalion (XXVIII. ustaška bojna)

Formed summer 1942 in Han Pijesak/48 km NE of Sarajevo in East Bosnia. (1)

1 Oct 42: Bn. HQ and HQ Co. in Vlasenica/55 km NE of Sarajevo, 1st Co. in Ploče, 2d Co. in Vlasenica, 3d Co. in Milići/12 km E of Vlasenica, and 4th Co. in Vlasenica.
1 Dec 42: Bn. HQ and most of the Battalion in Vlasenica.
9 Mar 43: the Bn. was attacked by the 6th East Bosnian NOU Brigade in the villages of Zljebovi and Kram along the Sarajevo – Vlasenica road losing 24 killed and 45 wounded. The Partisans suffered 17 dead and 29 wounded at the hands of the Battalion.
14 Apr 43: Bn. now in Han Pijesak with HQ Co. and 1st – 4th Co.
24 Jun 43: XXVIII Ustasha Bn. attacked by elements of the 1st Proletarian Assault Division NOVJ in Han Pijesak and forced to withdraw from the village.
Jul 43: disbanded. It’s personnel were reassigned to one or the other of the new German-Croatian Police, the German 13. SS-Freiw.Geb.Div. “Handschar” (kroat. Nr. 1) or used to fill up depleted Ustasha battalions.
