XIII Ustasha Battalion (XIII. ustaška bojna)

Formed January 1942, probably in the Gračanica area of East Bosnia. Its personnel were nearly all Moslem and the Battalion is said to have had good morale and fighting spirit during most or all of its existence. (1)

Mar 42: Bn. HQ in Gračanica/18 km E of Doboj in East Bosnia in a strength of approximately 600.
11 Apr 42: Gračanica.
Jun 42: transferred from Gračanica to Pakrac/17 km S of Daruvar in Slavonia.
9 Jul 42: Bn. HQ in Pakrac.
Aug 42: Pakrac - operating against small bands of Partisans in the Psunj Mountains.
Sep 42: transferred from Slavonia to the Žumberak region north of Karlovac to block an anticipated Partisan invasion from Slovenia.
1 Oct 42: Bn. HQ in Novo Selo, 1st Co. in Kalje, 2d Co. in Gornje Vas and 3d Co. in Novo Selo, all of these being towns and villages in Žumberak.
1 Dec 42: Bn. HQ now in Gornje Vas/19 km WSW of Samobor; said to have four companies, but this may include a HQ Co.
1 Jan 43: deployed in Kalje (300 men), Novo Selo (120 men) and Stojdraga (45 men).
14 May 43: 1st Co. fought a short action against Partisans near Gornje Vas, but the results were not reported.
18 Jun 43: Bn. HQ and all three companies (1st – 3d) participated in a clearing operation in the Gornje Vas – Sosice area that was run by Italian XI Corps.
24 Jul 43: participated in a successful 2-day clearing operation in the Žumberak together with the Italian Division “Lombardia” and the V Ustasha Battalion. Most of the Partisans were driven out of the area back into Slovenia.
9-12 Sep 43: the 13th Proletarian NOU Brigade “Rade Končar” overran and captured the Ustasha garrison positions in Gornje Vas and Novo Selo decimating two companies from the Battalion, which lost a total of 90 killed and 6 captured; the Partisans claimed they lost only 5 deal and 2 wounded. Shortly after this devastating loss, the Battalion moved to Samobor/20 km W of Zagreb.
1 Jan 44 Mar 44: Bn. HQ, HQ Co., 1st – 4th Co. and a Volunteer Co. all in Samobor under Sector Samobor/Operations Zone Zagreb-Samobor (Croatian I Corps). Tactically under German 1. Kosaken-Kav.Div.
26 Mar 44: transferred to Bihać and assigned to German 273. Inf.Div.(kroat.) for operations; three days later it was ordered to move to Cazin.
9 May 44: Bn. HQ, HQ Co. (66 men), 1st Co. (114 men), 2d Co. (91 men) and 3d Co. (95 men) all in Samobor.
1 Jun 44: Samobor.
27-30 Jun 44: took part in Operation “Dünkirchen I” in the Žumberak, which was followed by Operation “Dünkirchen II” from 8 to 17 July in the same area.
1 Sep 44: Samobor - strength 639.
1 Oct 44: still in Samobor.
Nov 44: believed to have been disbanded toward the end of November and its personnel absorbed into either the XV or XX Ustasha Brigade/2d Croatian Infantry Division.
