IX Ustasha Battalion (IX. ustaška bojna)
by H.L. deZeng IV

Formed summer/fall 1941, probably in or around Zagreb. (1)

Operational History

(see III and IV Ustasha Brigades for additional information)

Dec 41: still in Zagreb. The Battalion saw very little action during 1942 and 1943.
Jun 42: in Mrkopalj/30 km E of Rijeka and Krapina to the north of Zagreb. It is believed to have been recruiting in this area rather than fighting.
Aug 42: Mrkopalj - shortly after this it transferred to Otočac/c. 85 km SSE of Rijeka.
19 Nov 42: Otočac in a strength of just two companies. The Battalion is noted as being “in formation” on this date. By the end of the year it had built up to a strength of approximately 600 men. Remained in Otočac until about March 1943.
1 Apr 43: now operational in Gospić with Bn. HQ and 1st Co. – 4th Co. under IV Ustasha Brigade.
15 Oct 43: Gospić - strength 4 officers, 88 NCOs and 582 men. Transferred to Karlobag on the north Dalmatian coast to the west of Gospić in late 1943.
21 Jan 44: Karlobag.
21 Feb 44: Karlobag - 700 newly mobilized Ustasha in the Otočac area were to be assigned to the Battalion (probably as IXa Ustasha Battalion, with the “a” suffix denoting that it was subordinated to IX Ustasha Battalion for training).
Apr – Jun 44: remained in Karlobag and by June had lost its separate identity as part of IV Ustasha Brigade. See this brigade for additional information on activity in that area.
