Milice Française was formed 10 Jan 1943 as the Milice Nationale from Service D'Ordre Légionaaire (SOL) when the Germans demanded that the Vichy French authorities created a more reliable security force to combat the partisans. It had several sub-sections: Franc-Garde was the regular troops and was divided into Franc-Garde Permanente and Franc-Garde Non-permanente. Les Miliciennes was the women's section. Avante-Garde Milicienne was the youth section. A special section, the Groupe Spécial de Sécurité (GSS), was formed late 1943 to be used for "special assignments" and to provide security from senior Milicie leaders. When France was liberated the Milice fled to Germany where the best soldiers were transferred to the Waffen-SS while the rest was sent to Italy were it fought the partisans.
