12. Infanterie-Division was formed in Schwerin on on 1 Oct 1934 under the cover name Infanterieführer II which was used until 15 Oct 1935. The infantry regiments were formed from 5. (Preußisches) Infanterie-Regiment and 6. Infanterie-Regiment of 2. Division of the Reichwehr. It was mobilized Aug 1939 as part of the 1. Welle (wave).
The division was destroyed July 1944 at Grodno during the Soviet summer offensive. The remnants were used to form the 12. Volksgrenadier-Division.
