The Reichswehr-Brigade 23 Würzburg of the Vorläufige Reichswehr was formed in June 1919 from the Freikorps units Freikorps Würzburg, Detachement Probstmayer, Freikorps Aschaffenburg, Freikorps Bamberg, Freikorps Bayreuth, Eiserne Schar Berthold and other smaller Freikorps units formed in Freistaat Bayern.

It was transferred into the Übergangsheer without any major changes.

It was used to form 7. Division in October 1920.
