The I./Panzer-Regiment 202 was formed on 10 February 1941 and equipped with ex-French Somua and Hotchkiss tanks and was sent to Yugoslavia where it arrived in September. It proved to be successful in the fighting against the partisans. It was redesignated Panzer-Abteilung 202 on 2 January 1943.
It was ordered to convert to captured ex-Italian tanks on 14 February 1944.
