The 541. Grenadier-Division was formed as Sperr-Division 541 by OKH Order of 10 July 1944, renamed into 541. Grenadier-Division by order of 17 July 1944. It was raised in Wehrkreis X and was thrown to the Eastern front in end of July were it saw action with the 2. Armee between Warsaw and East Prussia.
It was redesignated 541. Volksgrenadier-Division on 9 October 1944.

By 16 September 1944 all Grenadier-Division of 29th wave were ordered to reorganise following the 32th wave divisions as "Volksgrenadier-Divisionen".
