The XXIV Armeekorps was originally formed in 1938 as Generalkommando der Grenztruppen Saarpfalz. It took part in the French campaign and was reorganized into a motorized corps, XXIV Armeekorps (Mot.), in November 1941.

It was redesignated XXIV Panzerkorps on 21 June 1942.
