The 1. Panzerarmee was formed 25 Octobrt 1941 by the redesignation of Panzergruppe 1. It fought on the Eastern front, attached to Heeresgruppe Süd (January 1942 - July 1942), Heeresgruppe A (July 1942 - January 1943), Heeresgruppe Don (January 1943 - March 1943) and Heeresgruppe Süd (Mar 1943 - July 1944).

The staff was also known as Armeegruppe von Kleist (January 1942 - May 1942), Armeegruppe Raus (July 1944 - August 1944), and Armeegruppe Heinrici (August 1944 - October 1944 and December 1944 - February 1945) while commanding various German and Hungarian armies/formations.

It withdrew through the Ukraine and Poland before fighting with Heeresgruppe A in Slovakia.
