The 16. Armee was formed on 22 October 1939 from the staff of Grenzschutz-Abschnittkommando Nord (AOK 3). It surrendered 8 May 1945 to the Soviet 2nd Baltic Front in Courland.

1. General der Infanterie Paul Laux was severely wounded in an air crash of his "Fieseler Storch" when downed by a Soviet fighter during a reconnaissance flight over the Tuckums / Dzukste region in the greater Riga area on 30 August 1944. He died as a result of his wounds in Feldlazarett 158 in Riga/Latvia on 2 September 1944.
2. Ernst-Anton von Krosigk was killed 16 March 1945 in a Soviet fighter-bomber attack on his headquarters at Zabeln.
3. Oberstleutnant Kurt Hartmann was together with his cdr. Paul Laux on the recon flight on 30 August 1944, he immediately died by the air crash.
