The Festung Küstrin (in present day split between Küstrin-Kietz in Germany and Kostrzyn nad Odrą in Poland) was attacked by the Soviet forces and during the fighting the town was largely destroyed. SS-Gruppenführer Heinrich-Friedrich Reinefarth refused an ordered to fight to the end and escaped from the city with some soldiers.
