The Festung Kolberg (present dat Kołobrzeg) fought against the Soviet and Polish forces in March 1945 and by the time it was forced to surrender to the Polish First Army under Stanislav Poplavsky on 18 March it had managed to evacuate a large part of the refugees and soldiers.
