XXXVIII Ustasha Battalion (XXXVIII. ustaška bojna)
by H.L. deZeng IV
Formed January or February 1943, probably in South Slavonia or Syrmia. At the end of May it received orders to transfer from Stara Pazova in Syrmia to Slavonska Brod with 428 officers and men, but along the way 222 of them deserted with their weapons. Initial inquiries determined that perhaps 150 of these men may have attempted to volunteer for the German SS, presumably meaning the German-Croatian Police or the 13. SS-Freiw.Geb.Div. “Handschar” (kroat. Nr.1), both of which were carrying out energetic recruiting efforts within the Croatian armed forces at this time. The remainder of the Battalion was disbanded a short time later. (1)
