(6. Hrvatska Pješačka Divizija)
by H.L. deZeng IV

Ordered formed on or about 1 December 1944 with Division HQ in Banja Luka. There was a small German liaison team (DVK 306) assigned to the Division for coordination purposes. The Germans as well as Partisan and Allied intelligence all considered the Division to be of doubtful fighting value because it was weak and inadequately armed. It maintained an average strength of around 3,500 – 4,000 during its existence. (1)

Operational History

Dec 44 – Apr 45: the Division was responsible for the Banja Luka area northwest to Bos. Krupa, northeast to Sunja and Pakrac then back to Banja Luka, and it was tactically under the German LXIX. Armeekorps. It occupied garrisons in the major towns in its territory and defended these against Partisan attack. Offensive operations, according to its monthly combat reports, were generally in the strength of one or two battalions at the most and consisted of one-day sweeps in villages usually not more than 10-15 km from its main garrisons.
21 Dec 44: entered action for the first time this date as a Division, throwing back a weak Partisan attack on a strongpoint north of Banja Luka.
2 Jan 45: Division elements carried out reconnaissance patrols south of Bos. Gradiška.
16 Jan 45: sent out reconnaissance probes into the villages lying around Banja Luka.
30 Apr 45: withdrew from Banja Luka to around Bos. Dubica toward the end of April.
5-8 May 45: Division remnants joined the general retreat toward Zagreb and from there north toward the Austrian border.
