The Panzer-Abteilung 51 was formed on 13 January 1943 at Grafenwöhr from II./Panzer-Regiment 33. It was equipped with the new Panther tanks for the fighting at Kursk and was assigned to Panzer-Regiment von Lauchert. In January 1944 it again became II./Panzer-Regiment 33.
