The Panzer-Abteilung (Fkl) 303 was formed in January 1945 from Panzer-Kompanie 319 (Fkl) and the fourth companies of Panzer-Abteilung (Fkl) 301 and Panzer-Abteilung (Fkl) 302. On 17 February 1945 it was ordered to be formed into a normal Panzer-Abteilung and it was redesignated Panzer-Abteilung Schlesien.

The "(Fkl)" in the name was for "Funklenk", a reference to the radio-controlled demolition vehicles used.
